The prices of vegetables shot up on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week and most of the items, including aubergine and bitter gourd, sold for Tk 100-140 a kilogram on Friday.
Except papaya, there were no vegetables on the markets which were selling bellow Tk 80 a kilogram on the day, consumers said.
They expressed dissatisfaction over the surge in prices of vegetables while the prices of other commodities, including green chilli, onions, garlic, sugar, potatoes and ginger, have also increased in recent weeks.
Retailers said that the prices of vegetables increased on the wholesale markets due to a supply shortage while the wholesalers said that the prices of some of the vegetables increased a little bit over the week, but the retailers in some cases were gaining 100 per cent profit.
The prices of most of the vegetables increased by Tk 30- 50 a kilogram in the city over the week.
Aubergine sold for Tk 100–110 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 50–60 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 110–140 a kilogram, bottle gourd for Tk 80–100 apiece, pointed gourd for Tk 60-80 a kilogram, okra for Tk 80–100 a kilogram, cucumber for Tk 80–90 a kilogram, carrot for Tk 100–150 a kilogram and tomatoes for Tk 100–180 a kilogram on Friday.
The price of green chillies remained high and the item sold for Tk 320-400 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
The price of garlic increased by Tk 40 a kilogram over the week and the imported garlic sold for Tk 200–240 a kilogram while its local variety sold for Tk 130–160 a kilogram on the day.
The price of potatoes remained high and the item sold for Tk 45-50 a kilogram over the week.
The prices of fish increased by Tk 20-30 a kilogram over the week in the city.
Rohita sold for Tk 350–420 a kilogram and Katla for Tk 340–400 a kilogram, depending on size and quality.
Pangas sold for Tk 210–240 a kilogram and Tilapia for Tk 200–240 a kilogram on Friday.
The prices of ginger also remained high over the week in the city and imported ginger sold for Tk 180-300 a kilogram while the local item sold for Tk 300–350 a kilogram on Friday.
Unpackaged refined sugar sold for Tk 140-150 a kilogram in the city on the day.
The price of local onions remained high and the item sold for Tk 70-75 a kilogram while the imported one sold for Tk 40-50 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
The prices of rice remained high in the city over the week.
The coarse and medium-quality varieties of rice sold for Tk 50–52 a kilogram on Friday.
BR-28 variety, known as a lower-grade Miniket, retailed at Tk 60–62 a kilogram.
The fine-variety of Miniket sold for Tk 70–75 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80–90 a kilogram on Friday.
The price of broiler chicken remained unchanged and the item retailed at Tk 180–190 a kilogram on Friday.
Locally bred hens sold for Tk 600–650 a kilogram on the day.
The price of Sonalika variety of chicken remained unchanged and the item sold for Tk 260–280 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
The price of eggs remained high and the item sold for Tk 46-48 a hali (four pieces) in the city on Friday.
The price of beef remained high over the week and the item sold for Tk 780–800 a kilogram on the markets in the capital on Friday.
The price of mutton also remained high and the item sold for Tk 1,100–1,200 a kilogram on the day.
The price of fine variety of red lentil remained high and the item sold for Tk 135–140 a kilogram on Friday.
The coarse variety of red lentil sold for Tk 95–100 a kilogram and the medium-quality variety for Tk 120–125 a kilogram on Friday.
Although the government on July 11 announced a cut in the price of soya bean oil by Tk 10 a litre and it was supposed to take effect on July 12, the item still traded at higher prices on the markets.
The price of unpackaged soya bean oil was set at Tk 159 a litre, but the item sold for Tk 165-175 a litre on Friday.
The commerce ministry announced that the price of packaged soya bean oil was decreased to Tk 179 a litre, but the item sold for Tk 190 a litre in the city on Friday.
The price of a five-litre container of soya bean oil was set at Tk 873 and the item sold for Tk 880-890 on the city markets.
Palm oil sold for Tk 130-135 a litre on Friday.
