UAE retailers declare 75% discount on essentials during Ramadan

Hypermarkets and super shops across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have declared up to 75 percent off on over 10,000 food and nonfood products during the holy Ramadan, the Khaleej Times reported today.

According to the major UAE newspaper the big retailers of the oil-rich Middle Eastern country announced reduction of prices to benefit their consumers and their decision came 10 days ahead of the start of the Muslims month of restraints.“Shoppers can benefit from up to 75 percent off on over 10,000 food and nonfood products during the holy month,” read the Khaleej Times report.

The report from the UAE came while police headquarters in Dhaka today said their officers in field level were ordered to enforce a vigil of kitchen markets to prevent increase of commodity prices and profit mongers from taking advantage of peoples demand during the holy month.

“Instructions have also been given to take necessary steps to ensure that none creates any untoward situation by spreading rumours about price hike and insufficiency of food stock,’ police’s additional inspector general Md Atiqul Islam said.

His comments came following a police headquarters meeting with field level officials up to police commissioners and deputy inspectors general level.

The Khaleez Times report said the big UAE retailers decided to reduce prices of essentials up to 75 percent last week while other retailers last month announced 50 percent discount on thousands of products including groceries for six weeks, coinciding with the Ramadan.
Major retailer LuLu Hypermarkets, one of the big retailers announced the launch of a massive Ramadan campaign across their 97 hypermarkets in the UAE saying a wide range of special deals and promotions will be offered to shoppers both online and offline.

Lulu has also announced a “price lock” initiative during the Ramadan under which more than 200 products were selected to be sold at the same price, “irrespective of market conditions, throughout Ramadan”.Union Coop is another hypermarkets where shoppers can buy over 10, 000 basic food and nonfood  products during the holy month as the Dubai-based retailer launched its Ramadan campaign offering discounts of up to 75 per cent on essential products, the Khaleej Times said.

It said all commodities, including food and beverages; electronics and household appliances are included to meet the increasing demand throughout the month of Ramadan.
